Congratulations to Dustin Korte of Metropolis, in competing in the U.S. Junior Amateur in Shoal Creek Alabama. Korte shot rounds of 81-80 to finish the first two rounds of stroke play T-131. He failed to make the cut for match play, but the SIGA is proud to have one of our own competing at the national level. Good job Dustin, keep up the hard work.
As if winning the Junior Girls Division of the SIGA Championship made for a full-week, Cassie Rushing simply made her title the icing on the cake. Earlier in the week she competed in the Trust Choice Big I Junior Classic in Pekin IL, July 16-17. Cassie fired rounds of 75-81 to claim the title and earned the right to advance to the national event, August 2-7 at Pinehurst N.C. Cassie's sister Ashleigh won the alternate spot, finishing 6 strokes back. Congrats to the Rushing family, and good luck in Pinehurst.
2008 SIGA Championship, presented by Peoples National Bank
The 84th SIGA Championship, hosted this year by Franklin County Country Club in West Frankfort, and presented by Peoples National Bank, turned out to be a successful tournament filled with great scores and dramatic finishes.
On the Men’s side, the first round leader, Lucas Cromeenes from Metropolis carded a 4-under par 67, good for a one shot advantage over McLeansboro’s Bryan Warren. Warren came back the second day for a see-saw battle with Cromeenes, but a birdie at the last helped secure a one shot victory for Warren.
The Women’s Championship division was not short on drama as well. First Round Leader Chelsea Harris entered the day 2 shots clear of friend and fellow competitor Amie Koerner, after shooting 68 to Koerner’s 70. After a front nine 40, Harris turned it on, scorching the back nine in 30 shots, to claim the SIGA Trophy. If not for a lip-out birdie putt on 15, Harris could have been one of a very few golfers to shoot a 29.
In the Men’s senior division, Tom Williams of Mt. Vernon led after round one with an even par 71. Again, after an opening 42 on the difficult front nine at Franklin County CC, Williams kicked it up a notch, shooting 32 on the back side, and edging the defending Senior Champion, Joe Davidson by 2.
In the Women’s senior division, Kathy Pericak-Spector ran away with the title, shooting two rounds of 73, including a hole-in-one at the par 3 eighth hole on Sunday. Pericak-Spector’s 146 was also good enough for fourth place in the women’s gross division.
In the Men’s net division, Roger Tippy used his home course knowledge to shoot a net 64 on Saturday, good enough for a four stroke lead on brothers Kyle and Rocky Ridgeway. Tippy followed up Saturday’s excellent round with a solid 70, with Rocky hot on his tail shooting 67. Tippy edged Ridgeway by a single shot, good enough for the net division victory.
In the Women’s Net division, Mt. Vernon’s Kathy Ireland led wire-to-wire, besting Franklin County CC’s Krys Fisher for the win. Ireland fired net rounds of 70-67 for the title.
The Junior Boys division garnered more drama, as the boys needed extra holes to determine a champion. After first round leader Shane Dyel repeated his 74 on Sunday, Kaleb Kessler of Sparta bettered his first round 75 by 2, and the 2 were locked up atop the leader board. It took 4 holes of sudden death to determine a Champion, with Kessler hoisting the B.W. Bruce Junior Championship Trophy.
The Junior Girls division was somewhat of a family reunion. After playing together Saturday, Ashleigh and Cassie Rushing found themselves at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final day. Ashleigh, who shot 73 on Saturday, was chasing her sister and friend Cassie who opened with a 69. After both players carder 73 on Sunday, Cassie successfully defended her title.
Special thanks to People’s National Bank, who proudly sponsored the 2008 SIGA Championship. Peoples National Bank helped make our Major Golf Tournament a success, and your commitment to the people of southern Illinois again stands tall.
